petros chrisostomou portrait kiosk small hoch stapler petros chrisostomous spondilos selected works schuhe petros chrisostomou kunst installationen high heels galactos ausstellung Petros Chrisostomou photographs small-scale, ordinary, ephemeral objects in architectural models that he constructs himself, and then dramatically arranges, often employing lighting and staging conventions of the theatre. With the alteration of scale and reversal of the relation between object and environment, between imaginary and real space, his photographs challenge the viewer’s visual certainties. The illusionary effect he achieves highlights the artist’s playful approach, which fluctuates between mimicry of the real world and construction of a surreallistic reality.

In his photographs, the exuberant assemblage of objects in luxurious interiors – resembling wreckage from some disaster -create paradoxical still lifes that parody the traditional memento mori style of the genre. In his works Rococo bluff I and Rococo bluff 2, the objects he creates out of balloons, chewing gum, fabric and glasses are freed of their ordinary use and become dynamic protagonists. Similarly, the details of the rococo set consist of everyday objects, functioning as contemporary cultural signifiers. Christosomou’s photographs become the field for mixing the high- and the low-brow, mass culture and genre painting, the luxurious and the expendable, as indications of social class distinctions. At the same time, the relations between the real and the imaginary in his oeuvre are a commentary on the mediated images of contemporary mass media that distort the natural and immediate dimension of our relation to reality, determining, among other things, the conditions for viewing and receiving art.

packaging design 2.0

Oktober 20, 2011 in Design, Kunst, Werbung

… interessantes packaging design konzept by Jones Knowles Ritchie inspiriert von  The Graphic Nothing of Mona Lisa by Gary Andrew Clarke. zuerst erfährt man das design mehr als kunst, denn als gestaltete verpackung.

abstract packs 01 packaging design 2.0 shopping products shapes road test recognisable packaging design mona lisa marlboro lucky strike kunst kellogg jkr.co.uk glance few surprises familiarity dots distinctive shape desc conclusions colman coke circular dots bold graphics art andrew clarke abstraction

Designed by Jones Knowles Ritchie, United Kingdom.

I was struck by this interpretation of the Mona Lisa by Gary Andrew Clarke – while remixed down to 140 exact circular dots it still has a familiarity, despite being very abstracted.

I wondered how many ‘iconic’ pack designs would fare if treated in the same way, so I asked the artist to road test a few. He kindly obliged and below are the results….enjoy them as ‘art’ first perhaps, then try and pick out the brands.

I had a few surprises – I naturally assumed Coke would reign supreme, but the slightly fiddly nature of the line and script did not survive the test. Kellogg’s though, with its more distinctive shape, fared far better. Colman’s turned out to have little left at this degree of abstraction, whereas Marlboro clearly still reads.

A couple of conclusions: firstly, the brands abstracted look pretty cool as art huh? Secondly, one would assume that putting super-bold graphics through the same filter that was applied to a murky, mostly brown, old master’s painting would leave them comparatively well placed – that this is not always the case suggests they might not all be as recognisable when abstracted as we would have assumed.

And finally, strong shapes on pack prove to offer the best chances of survival of this process to retain recognition. This is interesting if one considers that many consumers are shopping products with impaired vision and no glasses on – it’s quite an illuminating test of graphic equities in a world where packs are ‘read’ at a glance without 20-20 vision.

Biography Tenka Gammelgaard, who was born in 1960, graduated from the Danish Design Academy in 1985 and since then, she has had a number of solo exhibitions in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and France. Tenka Gammegaard’s works are exquisite tributes to the renowned Danish writer, farmer and baroness Karen Blixen, whose life was portrayed in the Hollywood film “Out of Africa”. Blixen’s fabulous pieces of literature are quoted on Tenka Gammelgaard’s beautiful and minimalistic canvases. The paintings depict white and black nuances interrupted by simple gold or silver plated shapes. Her paintings are like seductive fairytales in which one almost disappears into the artist’s unique world.
